Neo came to the HBSPCA after his owner never came to claim him.
During a routine blood screening Neo was diagnosed with deadly Heartworm. Heartworm is a parasite that is transmitted by mosquito bites. Heartworm is becoming more of an issue in Hamilton and surrounding areas. We have seen and treated 6 cases already this year. Therefore, yearly heartworm testing and monthly preventative during the warmer months is vital for all dogs. If left untreated heartworms can multiply and block the blood flow to and from the heart and eventually cause death.
Remember Heartworm is preventable!
Treatment for heartworm is an expensive and painful process that takes 2-3 months. Each treatment costs the SPCA $1500 per case. The HBSPCA treats an average of 12 heartworm cases every single year.
The cost for Neo’s heartworm treatment has generously been provided by Karen & Peter Turksta Family Foundation Fund through Hamilton Community Foundation.
Neo has been doing well during his treatment and will soon be looking for his forever home. Please watch our website for when Neo will be accepting applications.
