So, firstly, what are they? We all have an internal ‘clock’ of sorts that is regulated by daylight exposure and darkness. This circadian rhythm controls multiple physiological functions that any physique athlete should be highly interested in such as metabolic, hormonal function, rest and repair. In the modern world, we are all exposed to artificial light after sundown. This prevents melatonin secretion, and thus reduces sleep efficiency by increasing the duration of nREM and deep sleep.
By wearing light frequency blockers from sundown, you are blocking disruptive frequencies and improving sleep quality. Seems like a no brainer.
Do they work?
Blueblocking glasses reduced sleep and circadian rhythm dysregulation in young adult students. Bare in mind within this population is the highest incidence rate of irregularities in sleep, which really supports the efficacy of the study. (Research attached below). Although blocking bluelight is important, a good pair will block any artificial frequencies including some reds, oranges, greens etc that will disrupt melatonin secretion.
I use, and recommend, Ra Optics. Don’t go cheap and buy clear lenses from Amazon that only block 40% of blues, look for a pair that provides analyses to block anything above 550nm.
