Medium Density: Did you know that the Los Angeles urban area has the highest population density of any urban area in the United States? At 7,000 pop/sq mi, LA has higher density even than New York and San Francisco, two areas much more closely associated with urban density [5,320 and 6,270 pop/sq mi, respectively]. If you are confused, you are not alone.
Despite it's famously low-rise, single-family cityscape (largely true though large swaths are much denser than people realize), LA consists of a homogenous mass of sprawl with uniformly high (relatively) density, even in distant suburbs. This is unlike most other cities which are essentially built as concentric circles of ever-decreasing density.
The first two photos show residential areas in South LA, some of the densest in the region, while the third shows a part of the San Gabriel Valley, typically considered an outlying suburb. The difference in density is relatively minor.
