I spent some time in Yosemite NP today near Wawona, scouting for a birding trip that I will be co-leading this coming Wednesday. All in all, I'd say it was fairly productive for this time of year. Some of the best birds of the day were Red-breasted Sapsucker, Wilson's Warbler, Orange-crowned Warbler, Pacific-slope Flycatcher, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Purple Finch, and a Lewis's Woodpecker I saw on my way back down to the Valley (my first of the season). Here in these pictures are an industrious male Hairy Woodpecker along the Meadow Loop trail, a Brewer's Blackbird near the Merced River, a Common Raven looking for food scraps in a convenience store parking lot across from the river, and a California Ground Squirrel eating some flowers along the Mariposa Grove trail.
