Took a much needed long weekend out of the city to enjoy Fall and take a break before some big transitions come my way in the next few months. It’s hard to slow down sometimes, but I’m learning to embrace those moments when I have them 😌

“It’s not about my right to breastfeed, it’s about my child’s right to eat.”
-Unknown 🤱❤️
.
I love the perspective of this quote! The protected legal right to breastfeed whenever and wherever you need to is so incredibly important and valid. But I think it is easy for some to forget that public breastfeeding is about one thing, feeding a baby. Whether that looks like nursing directly from the parent or a parent pumping milk for their child. It’s about feeding a tiny human. ❤️

BREASTMILK IS MAGIC
I so enjoyed listening to the wisdom these two women and IBCLCs (International Board Certified Lactation Consultants) brought for the expecting mamas and couples who attended our #PrenatalBreastfeedingClass last night!
They offered these parents a solid grounding in the information that can be so useful, and eliminate fears about feeding once baby is born.
Did you or are you taking a PRENATAL Breastfeeding Class outside of a hospital before baby arrives?
The setting makes a massive difference. Hospitals tend to teach parents how to be good patients. Independent lactation consultants are truly invested in supporting the breastfeeding journey for baby and the parents, with no ulterior motive, and no formula companies repping their products and seeding doubt in the minds of vulnerable mothers.
Education is POWER.

Ideally with a healthy non-life threatening birth, baby gets to go skin to skin and stay there until the first breastfeed. Not all is lost if this doesn’t happen. You can recreate this as soon as you and baby are reunited. Someone skilled in lactation can help you with this.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I've been nursing babes for over 8 years of my life now (via pumps, and tubes, and bottles, and bodies) and knowing this babe is my last is so bittersweet. When Monique reached out to ask if I wanted to collaborate with her to create a breastmilk keepsake I was thrilled. I'm not a jewelry person but we found a simple bee / honeycomb necklace I adore and the process could not have been easier.

I don't pump and have a huge aversion to expressing milk but I only had to provide an ounce, and the process from selection to shipping and return could not have been easier. Monique also works with placenta, umbilical cords, hair, and cremation ashes and has a collection of lovely pieces (the photo locket is my second fav!)

One lucky human will receive $50 off their order and a free European bead with A Mother’s Blessed Keepsakes order.

Stage 1: Birth Cry
The first cry helps expand the lungs. Some cry for longer than others and usually stop when put skin to skin.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Stage 2: Relaxation
Baby is in a relaxed state and enjoys being skin to skin
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Stage 3: Awakening
Movements like opening eyes, lifting shoulders, and moving the mouth. May see parent for the first time. All three stages take place in the first three to five minutes.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Stage 4: Activity
Baby roots, looks around more and acts hungry. Typically around eight minutes after birth.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Stage 5: Resting
May occur at any point and often happens between stages
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Stage 6: Crawling
Baby uses their feet to move their body toward the nipple. May bob their head as they look for the nipple and areola. Typically around 35 minutes after birth.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Stage 7: Familiarization
Can last up to 20 minutes. Baby is processing by licking, touching, massaging and becoming familiar. No hurry, baby will take their time.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Stage 8: Latching
Beginning of feeding. Baby will open their mouth and latch. This normally takes up to an hour after birth. Incredibly babies are capable of self-attaching! It can be difficult to allow baby enough time to go through this process. *Anesthesia during labor may prolong the process.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Stage 9: Sleeping
At about sixty minutes to one hour after birth baby will sleep.

It’s really people out here telling mommas that surgical birth is not birth and not a ceremony. 🙄🙄 Listen here! SURGICAL BIRTH IS CEREMONY and surgical birth IS birth. We can work towards a world with fewer C-Sections without damaging the souls of womxn who experience them. As birth workers it’s never our job to determine if someone’s C-Section was “necessary” or not. Our job and sacred purpose is to humbly support with compassion and non-judgement. Surgical birth warriors/survivors/thrivers deserve the best we have to offer. Period. They need extra support to rebuild their blood supply, fortify the body for lactation, cleanse and shrink the uterus to stop excess bleeding, stimulate digestion, prevent infection, and heal the incision site to prevent adhesions from forming on the abdominal wall, bladder, colon, and uterus. 🍵🍂 If you love and respect surgical birth warriors and wanna learn HOW to achieve this by using our beautiful resilient cultural traditions, be sure to sign up for notifications at my website medicinewatersdoula.com 💯 My online course drops in just a few weeks. 🙏🏽💓✊🏽👶🏽 #CSectionRecovery #BirthIsSacred #NewMotherhood #Breastfeeding #Chestfeeding #BreastfeedingCounselor #Doula #TraditionalHealing #MinobimaadziwinAfterBirth #GoodHealth #GoodHealthAfterBirth #HealingFromBirth #Postpartum #TheFourthTrimester

We just had an amazing family getaway at a new waterpark: big kid did this crazy boogie board ride, middle kid loved the little kid area and the Little baby got to try swimming for the 1st time- spiller alert, she LOVED it.
•
My husband and I always value experiences over things and try to do these trips a few times a year. What is your favorite ways to make family memories?

The awesome @bellashanda (the IBCLC who leads our Tuesday 9:30am nursing support group) demonstrating the “Tiger Over Tree Branch” hold. This is a great hold for babies that are a little gassy. The pressure from your forearm against baby’s tummy helps relieve gas. Add a little sway and they drift away. 😴

Are/were you aware of how ‘little’ a newborn and baby actually needs at various ages? Looking at bottles can be intimidating, but you can trust your body to give just the right amount and for baby to moderate properly (typically). @withrepost • @aleeshaburkeibclc Newborns start off with very small stomachs that stretch and grow over the first four weeks. Remember the analogy that your stomach is as big as your hand? Well newborns have teeny hands. These are roughly the amounts babies will take during the first part of their life. You can also calculate their average milk intake per feed by weight. Your baby isn’t going to take in the same at every feeding. Just like you and I don’t. Sometimes we need thanksgiving dinner and other times we need snacks and sips. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Childbirth classes help build your confidence in your body's ability to give birth and your wisdom in your parenting choices. They provide a safe space where you can discuss your fears about labor, birth, postpartum, and parenting with a knowledgeable teacher and other couples with similar concerns.

We're offering our childbirth education courses as a series or individual courses so you can take what you need and not what you don't. AND We're offering them ONLINE to make them accessible and convenient (yep, you can take them from your phone in your pjs if you want!). Send us a message to register! There's still time to sign up for the last October session & be on the lookout for a Sunday afternoon series in December ♡ ~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~• #birth #baby  #doula #postpartumdoula

This video from @mydarlingdoula literally could be and ad for Black Breastfeeding Week 🤱🏽 The bopping baby, the sibling love, classic Nas & Lauryn Hill playing...its EVERYTHING!!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Black Breastfeeding Week exists because there are still racial disparities in breastfeeding, with black women having the lowest rates of initiation and duration of breastfeeding. Black mothers who chose to nurse also face more barriers in long lack of support, lack of access to educational resources, and aggressive push for formula in their communities.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We’ll be sharing more of my fave posts and videos of #BBW19 in our stories, but would love to hear your experiences from own breastfeeding journey. What are your biggest triumphs and/or struggles? Did you feel supported? What do you see as barriers still for black women who decide to breastfeed?

I realized that because I’m fairly private about things that challenge me, I might inadvertently be curating my social media to be one of those people who looks like they have a perfect, shiny life. All rainbows and beatific smiles after our terrible tragedy. I know I’ve shared about grief, and I’m not too shy about my vaudeville moments, but I don’t like be seen as complaining so I rarely post about the actual daily hard stuff. The intensely painful blockage in my breast that comes with a fever and the inability to carry my daughter. The sobbing while she nurses and I contemplate giving up chest feeding and what that would mean for us. Rocking her for hours in the middle of the night, crying and pleading with her to go to sleep and stop pulling at an empty boob. How driving in the car makes Hazel scream, which gives me an instant tension headache that I feel from my scapula to my forehead to my elbows. .
Going through a tragedy doesn’t excuse you from future hardship. Hazel is our redemption, our beautiful miracle, the baby we’ve been waiting for, whom Juno created a path for — and she’s a totally normal, fussy, growing, needy baby. We’re overjoyed and cranky, constantly crying happy tears and this-is-so-freaking-hard frustrated ones. Chest feeding has been a struggle for me. Just behind the camera here are the breast pump and vibrator that I was using earlier to try to clear a blockage while Brendan held Hazel up to nurse from the other breast. In this photo the bowl of cereal is balanced precariously on the bed with a burp cloth over the sheets and I’m using one foot to fend off the cat from stealing my breakfast. I am smiling slightly though, because I love strawberries in my cereal and maybe my breast feels slightly less painful than yesterday and Brendan gave me a critique of all the board books he read to Hazel while I got an hour of sleep at dawn. (We’re taking Yummy Yucky out of rotation because it’s too binaristic and coffee and hot sauce are not “yucky”.) .
Thank you for listening and being my friend. And for making it okay to be human and fallible. Embracing the imperfection and mundane.

I'm at the end of my nursing journey - after a total of 81 months (which is nearly 7 years of my adult life) and three well-fed kiddos. I didn't plan to practice extended breastfeeding and didn't know that I could commit to something so entirely. Though, in lots of ways, it evolved more out of laziness than commitment since, for me, it was so much harder to stop. But now I'm ready to get my body back, get my space back and get my time back. But as a CLC, I'm excited to use my personal knowledge to help new parents commit (or not commit!) to breast/chestfeeding. 🤱🏻 When my youngest was first learning how to speak, he couldn't quite pronounce "nurse". So now, when he wants to, he says "Us, please" - which I think is just about the sweetest thing ever. It reminded me to pause and take a moment for "us" amongst the chaos of our family of five. Though, this image is a prime example of why it's time for "us" to learn to connect in another way (working/writing papers while trying to “us” your small humans is not ideal, and that’s ok). 🤱🏾 So, as World Breastfeeding Week comes to a close, I wanted to shout out all the parents who feed their babies in all the many ways they are able to. This year's theme of "Empower Parents, Enable Breastfeeding" is so aligned to MomTown's: the objectives being to inform, anchor, engage and galvanize gender-equitable and parent-friendly nursing support which protects and advances breastfeeding and chestfeeding around the world.
