In fact these are umbrellas—long a symbol of passive resistance in Hong Kong—held aloft by pro-democracy activists at the huge rally on the island on Sunday.
Undeterred by heavy rain and police restrictions, protesters sent the world two messages.
First, that even after 11 weeks of protests, their anti-government campaign is still in fine fettle.
Second, that those responsible for the havoc and violence at the city's airport are not representative of the largely peaceful and broad-based pro-democracy movement.
