The camels! Fast forward 50 years from the 1880s to the 1930s, and this photo would be illegal due to the presence of that camel. That’s because Reza Shah outlawed foreigners from taking photos of camels in the 1930s. He did not want Iran to appear backwards. Sorry Reza, I had to post this, it’s just too fascinating. Despite the fact that the Zoo was a favored walkabout among German soldiers during the Holocaust it was also a safe haven for around 200-300 people in hiding. The people even hid above the enclosures of the lions and the wolves. That’s why till the 20th of January 2020 the Amsterdam Light Festival has 4 glowing wolves and silhouettes of hidden figures . Isaac has got a rare and poetic family name - Vainshelboum, which means “cherry tree” in Yiddish. He was born in Ukraine in a shtetl called Starokonstantinov, which on the eve of World War II was inhabited by 25.000 Jews. Isaac was only nineteen when the war broke out, and he went straight to the frontlines from the military college that he was attending as a junior officer. He commanded a platoon, then a company and finally, at the age of twenty-two, an infantry battalion of eight hundred soldiers.
Isaac found it embarrassing that the attack that left him gravely wounded was lead by him shouting “For Stalin! For Motherland!” like in a bad war novel. His battalion was reduced from 800 to 140 men in that attack, and Isaac himself was carried away with a head injury that had him lose the ability to speak for months. Eventually, he regained his speech and became a well known lawyer in his hometown.
Isaac was a second generation Jew fighting in the war. His father Abram Vainshelboum served at the same front. He was a soldier in the third generation - Isaac’s grandfather Tevie along with his brother Shima became Jewish conscripts in the Imperial Russian Army at the age of twelve. After the mandatory 25 years of military service they used the money that they saved to build a synagogue in their hometown, naming it Soldier’s Synagogue. When Isaac was a Soviet schoolboy, grandfather Tevie would take him to his synagogue, risking to bring the displeasure of the authorities on their heads. Taube Jewish Heritage Tours co-organized a heritage tour in partnership with Netzer Australian madrichim and Progressive Community.
The group of 16 students participated in a 10-day-long educational seminar in Germany and Poland. Led by Netzer Shaliach Sefi Shalam and co-organized by Natalia Czarkowska from Taube Jewish Heritage Tours, the seminar focused on European history, with visits to historical sites tainted by the Holocaust, and also on modern Jewish life.
The group toured from Berlin to Wroclaw through Bedzin, Krakow, Warsaw, and Lodz. They visited and commemorated the Holocaust at Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum and the Memorial and the Museum of Struggle and Martyrdom in Treblinka.
The seminar was filled with meetings, discussions and guided tours. Among many highlights were: the Schindler's Factory in Krakow, POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, Emanuel Ringelblum Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw and the Manufaktura in Lodz.
Students met with Piotr Jakoweńko from Brama Cukermana in Bedzin, where they learned about the protection of Jewish heritage in Polish small towns and with Michael Rubenfeld in Krakow, where they discussed everyday Jewish life in modern Poland.
The trip concluded in Warsaw with a beautiful Kabbalat Shabbat at the Ec Chaim Progressive Synagogue, which Rabbi Stas Wojciechowicz co-led with Netzer Australia.

R' Shlomo Luria was born in the city of Poznań , Poland. His father, R' Yechiel Luria, was the rabbi of the Lithuanian city of Slutzk and the son of the Miriam Luria. The Luria family claims descent from Rashi. He studied in Lublin under R' Shalom Shachna, and later in the Ostroh yeshiva under R' Kalonymus Haberkasten; he later married Lipka, daughter of R' Kalonymus. The Maharshal served as Rabbi in Brisk and various Lithuanian communities for 15 years.
When his father-in-law assumed the position of Rosh Yeshiva in Brisk, R' Shlomo replaced him as the official rabbi of Ostroh. He later succeeded R' Shalom Shachna as head of the famed Lublin Yeshiva, which attracted students from all over Europe. Due to various internal problems in the yeshiva, he opened his own yeshiva. The building, known as the "Maharshal's shul", remained intact until World War II.
The Maharshal wrote "Yam Shel Shlomo", a major work of Halacha; "Chochmat Shlomo" on the text of the Talmud; "Yeri'ot Shlomo", a super-commentary on Rashi's commentary on the Torah; and "Amudei Shlomo", a commentary on Sefer Mitzvot Gadol.

Growing up, I was someone who would be mortally offended if a stranger wished me a merry Christmas. To me, it was no different than saying “Hanukkah doesn’t matter.” I couldn’t appreciate the sentiment in the spirit in which it was given. •
My hurt feelings came from a wounded place. I felt lonely as a Jew on the fringes of a heavily Christianized society. After being asked by more than one classmate if Hanukkah was the “Jewish Christmas” (every year it was someone different!), you can see why having strangers assume I celebrated their holiday was the last straw for my patience. •
While there is certainly an argument to be made that Christmas has become too secular, too focused on consumerism, it certainly hasn’t gotten less popular. The debate over which greeting is more important is small in comparison to larger issues of religious tolerance, but really- what harm does it do to simply be inclusive? Will it detract from the meaning of Christmas at all? •
I can’t say I’d have converted any sooner if more Christians considered this. But I probably would have viewed them with a little less annoyance for the remainder of my childhood.

If you look back my gallery you can see this synagouge already ❗ #sastinsynagogue❗. I had to come back because this building enchanted my soul. But if you watch back the previous post about it, you can see, the synagouge had roof. Now, after 1 years later, 2019 not much before my second visit the roof was caved down. My heart is hurt becasue of this.
This area is west Slovakia, near the austrian and czech borders. This community was lived here from 1750. Befor WW1 lived here 500 jewish people.
The synagogue build in 1852, neo classical style. Historically, the Jewish community of Šaštín is among the oldest in Slovakia, with organized communal structure and institutions already in the 16th century. By the mid-19th century numbered the community over five hundred souls and had to construct a new sanctuary, preserved until today.
This free-standing neo-Classical synagogue dominates the rural community; the
surrounding buildings once served as Jewish communal institutions. The former rabbi’s home neighbors to the north; the house on the western side served as a school.
Holocaust period.
I didn't find much data about Holocaust in Sastin but about my reseaerch, 290 jew killed from Sastin. The jews of Slovakia killed in two part. The first time was in 1942. The nazis did a puppet government. The president was Jozef Tiso (he was priest) and his violence organization the Hilinka Guard deported to austwitz and labor camps. The second time germany occupation Slovakia and the remaining Jews were sent to death in 1944. From 136.000 Slovak jews left 5000.
After the Holocaust during communism Sastin synagouge used for warehause. For a while until nowaday the building fully abandoned. After the caved down the local peoples clean up the roof ruins and they try to renovation and use for culture hause.
