In yesterday's post I mentioned sharing the story of how I created the Bolster Stitch. But before I get into that, I wanted to let you know I'm offering the Lines, Stripes & Coffee, Oh My coffee cozy pattern for free till tomorrow night. As a little introduction on how to crochet the Bolster Stitch. Link in bio for pattern.
So now the story 📖
About 5 years back I started crocheting baskets & became obsessed w/making them. One evening my family & I sat down to watch a movie & I decided to make a basket while enjoying movie night. But w/this basket I wanted to try the criss cross stitch, which I hadn't crocheted before.
When I finally looked down at my work I realized what I was doing did not look like the criss cross stitch, but whatever I was crocheting, it felt so natural & it looked pretty cool. I finished the basket & I tried looking up the stitch. But how do you find a stitch when you don't know the name of it? 🤔
It was difficult.
After coming up empty handed, I contacted the Craft Yarn Council & Crochet Guild of America about it. They could not help w/what the stitch was but put me in contact with Susan Lowman. I messaged her. She said she had not seen the stitch before & wanted to check with Edie Eckman, who basically had the same response. Edie said she wanted to check w/one more designer, Dora Ohrenstein. Same reply.
So with their advice, I gave the stitch a name, started designing patterns w/it & share it w/the world.
Bolster Stitch it what I decided to name it, becuase it reminded me of a bolster pillow from my massage therapy days. It has a cylindrical look, it is cushiony & supports the basic sc, hdc or dc.
What a great mistake!
All my designs include the Bolster Stitch & I'm still figuring out different ways it can be worked.
P.S. I did learn how to crochet the criss cross stitch eventually 😁
Please tag me when you make anything from my patterns. I would love to see them & share your work!
