Sharks are one of the most misunderstood creatures in the ocean. Hollywood has depicted them as mindless killers, but nothing could be further from the truth.
They play a crucial role in keeping the ocean clean and healthy. In fact, they have been our sea’s top predator for over 400 million years.
Only recently have they become in danger. Humans kill an estimated 100 million sharks every single year (and rising with demand). It’s mainly for their fins, a coveted seafood item particularly in Asia. A small bowl of shark fin soup costs upwards of $100.
Sharks are pulled from the water, their fins cut from their bodies and dumped back in the water. This is a barbaric practice that happens every day around the world.
Don’t let the media or movies like Jaws fool you, we are the most dangerous predator.
Swimming with these beautiful creatures was unreal. Something that’s been in my nightmares (and on my bucket list for years). It’s been liberating to overcome my fear of sharks and open water. Truly a magical experience. ✨
